Konu Mia, a resident of Singha village in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj district, has finally walked free after spending over 30 years behind bars without trial or sentencing.
On Tuesday at around 10:30 am, Konu Mia was released from the Habiganj District Jail, confirmed legal aid lawyer M A Majid.
Konu Mia’s imprisonment dates back to May 25, 1995, when he was arrested for allegedly killing his mother, Mejestor Bibi, with a spade during a period of mental instability.
Following a confession in court, he remained imprisoned—initially with occasional contact from relatives, which faded over time until he was all but forgotten.
His case recently caught the attention of Muhammad Abbas Uddin, Senior Assistant Judge and Habiganj District Legal Aid Officer.
Judge Abbas Uddin reached out to Konu Mia’s brothers, Monu Mia and Nasu Mia, and took initiative to secure his release.
Due to the suspension of the murder case trial and Konu Mia’s mental health condition, the bail process was legally complex.
However, with assurances for proper care, shelter, and security, legal aid lawyer M A Majid filed a bail petition on July 14 with the Habiganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court.
After hearing the petition, Judge Jesmin Ara Begum granted bail, finally ending Konu Mia’s three-decade-long incarceration.
Family members were overwhelmed with emotion upon his release. “My brother is mentally ill. We’re overjoyed to have him back after so long,” said Monu Mia, Konu’s brother.
