Three individuals involved in a robbery and assault incident on a moving bus along the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway have been arrested.
Law enforcement recovered cash, gold ornaments, and 19 mobile phones stolen from passengers. The suspects have multiple criminal cases filed against them in various police stations.
The arrests were made during a police operation in Sirajganj on Sunday night. The incident occurred last Tuesday around 8 PM, when a passenger bus of Al Imran Paribahan departed from Abdullahpur in Dhaka toward Rangpur.
Several individuals posing as passengers boarded the bus from Narsinghpur, Baipail, and Ashulia areas of Savar.
The bus, carrying 38 passengers including about 10 women, crossed Elenga in Kalihati upazila of Tangail around 11:30 PM.
A group of 8–10 men, pretending to be passengers, suddenly brandished knives and other sharp weapons and took control of the vehicle near the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge.
The robbers frisked each passenger, looting mobile phones, around 219,000 taka in cash, gold, and other valuables.
After taking control of the bus, they drove it from Savar’s Chandra-Ashulia area and continued to circle between that region and Tangail throughout the night.
Police later used technology-based tracking methods to identify the suspects` locations and carried out targeted operations to apprehend them in different areas of Sirajganj.
Authorities plan to seek a seven-day remand for the arrested individuals to continue the investigation.
