Angry crowds have thrown eggs and shoes at former Member of Parliament and renowned folk singer Momtaz Begum. BNP-affiliated lawyers and activists also staged a protest demanding punishment for Momtaz.

The incident occurred on the court premises while Momtaz was being taken to a prison van following hearings in two separate cases related to murder and sabotage in Manikganj.

According to Officer-in-Charge Abul Khayer of the court police, Momtaz was presented in court on Thursday morning in connection with two cases filed in Harirampur and Singair.

She was brought from Kashimpur Central Jail to the Manikganj court in a prison van around 8:30 AM. Police have been granted a six-day remand for interrogation in the two cases.

Earlier, on the night of May 12, the Detective Branch arrested Momtaz from the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka.

A celebrated figure in Bangladeshi folk music, Momtaz Begum was first elected to parliament in 2008 as a candidate from the ruling Awami League and later re-elected under the party’s “boat” symbol.

However, she lost her seat in the 12th parliamentary election to an independent candidate who is also affiliated with the Awami League.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 of last year, Momtaz was named in several cases related to casualties during political protests.
