BNP commits to resolving Farakka–Teesta disputes and border issues if elected: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that future BNP-led government will place the highest priority on fair water-sharing of the Farakka and Teesta rivers, along with stopping border killings.

He added that resisting what he described as India’s “hegemonic attitude” towards Bangladesh will also be a key focus.

Speaking to the media after visiting the rubber dam built on the Mahananda River in Chapainawabganj on Saturday, Mirza Fakhrul said that India, as a neighbouring country, could easily maintain a positive and respectful relationship with Bangladesh if it chooses to. “India supported us during the Liberation War of 1971. They should stand by Bangladesh even more now. But unfortunately, the Modi government has exerted pressure on Bangladesh. They have taken everything and given nothing in return,” he remarked.

Mirza Fakhrul arrived in Chapainawabganj to attend a public rally organised under the banner of the “Save Padma, Save the Country; Bangladesh First” campaign. The rally is scheduled to be held on Saturday afternoon at the grounds of Nawabganj Government College.
