BNP padlocked Nagar Bhaban by force: Adviser Asif Mahmud

Supporters of BNP‍‍`s Ishraque Hossain blame Adviser Asif Mahmud for obstructing the process.

Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser at the Ministry of Local Government, has accused the BNP of forcibly closing down the Nagar Bhaban  as part of their ongoing protest movement.

In a Facebook post on Monday afternoon, he commented on the ongoing demonstration demanding that BNP leader Ishraq Hossain be officially instated as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Supporters of Ishraq, under the banner of “Dhakabashi,” have been staging sit-ins and protests in front of Nagar Bhaban for the sixth consecutive day.

They have padlocked the main gate, claiming that Ishraq is being prevented from taking oath as mayor despite a court verdict and a gazette notification by the Election Commission.

They blame Adviser Asif Mahmud for obstructing the process.

Citing ten legal and procedural complications as reasons for the delay, Asif Mahmud wrote that the oath cannot be administered until these issues are resolved.

“Instead of following proper procedures, BNP’s city unit has shut down Nagar Bhaban to force their demand. This has disrupted DSCC’s daily operations and caused public suffering,” he said.

Asif emphasized that since the matter is still pending in the High Court and complications remain unresolved, administering the oath at this time is not possible.

However, he noted that the Ministry of Local Government has no objection to conducting the oath once all legal issues are settled.

The adviser also shared a photo in his post and commented, “Personally, I can’t understand why Ishraq Hossain is targeting me with such aggressive and insulting behavior.

And let’s not pretend this is a citizens’ movement — according to various directives from BNP and its affiliated groups, and supported by intelligence agency reports, it is party activists who are carrying out this protest.”
