Even though he has questions over the newly-appointed president, BNP Secretary General Mirza Islam Alamgir has called the outgoing president, Abdul Hamid, a good person.
“As a human being, he was good and there is no doubt about it. He was lively and would consider things positively. But he had some limitations,” Fakhrul said about Hamid.
The BNP leader was making his reaction over the swearing-in of President Md Shahabuddin and the end of Abdul Hamid's tenure on Monday.
Hamid served the head of the state in two straight terms spanning over 10 years, during which two general elections were held. BNP participated in one of those and skipped the other.
Even the party took part in talks over elections at the request of then-president Abdul Hamid. Before that, BNP in 2016 wrote to him to place its proposals for a free and fair national election.
When asked about Hamid’s performance as the president, Fakhrul left the matter to “history”.
“To be straight, we had no expectations on him because he had little power. Moreover, he was very loyal to Awami League. So, it is natural in his case and this must happen,” added Fakhrul.
