It is regrettable that the people of the country are still need to fight for democracy after 52 years of independence, according to the claim of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
"It is unfortunate for us that we haven't succeeded in our mission during the Liberation War. We still have to sacrifice our lives for democracy even after 52 years of freedom. We must struggle for it. We are no longer able to cast ballots. We no longer have the freedom to talk openly," the party's secretary general stated.
He made the comment today after honoring the war martyrs by laying wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar in observance of the country's 53rd Independence Day.
"It was our aim and ambition to create a democratic state and society in keeping with the spirit of independence. But, the despotic, authoritarian Awami League administration is currently putting an end to the opposition to create a one-party system," Mirza Fakhrul added.
He said that "fake" cases were harassing BNP officials and activists, saying that "more than 35 lakh leaders and activists are being harassed in phony cases."
Fakhrul emphasized the desire to bring about democracy via the unification of those who support it.
