Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, the Chairman of Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has raised questions regarding British MP Tulip Siddiq’s resignation from her ministerial post if she is indeed innocent.
Speaking at a press conference at the ACC headquarters in Dhaka on Monday afternoon, the chairman stated that multiple cases are currently pending against Tulip Siddiq in Bangladesh.
“If she claims to be innocent, why did her lawyer send us a letter? And if she truly had no involvement, why did she step down from her ministerial position?” Momen questioned.
The ACC Chairman confirmed that the agency considers Tulip Siddiq a Bangladeshi citizen based on official documents and is proceeding with legal actions accordingly.
“She is accused in three cases, and another case is under process. Additionally, records show that in 2013, she earned nine lakh taka from a fish farm in Bangladesh,” Momen said.
“Since this income is reflected in her tax returns, regardless of her claim of being a British national, the official documents categorize her as a Bangladeshi citizen. Switching identities between British and Bangladeshi whenever convenient is highly questionable,” he added.
The ACC continues its investigation against Tulip Siddiq in line with Bangladeshi law.
