Khaleda Zia expresses hope for swift restoration of democracy

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed optimism that democracy will soon return to Bangladesh.

Speaking virtually at an event commemorating the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, she stated, “Ziaur Rahman laid down his life to uphold democracy, independence, and sovereignty. Yet, democracy continues to face setbacks. I believe it will soon be restored in the country.”

She called on party members to honor Zia’s legacy by upholding democratic values and seeking solutions to the nation’s problems through democratic means.

Reflecting on the personal and national sorrow associated with Zia’s assassination, she said, “Every year, this day brings back deep pain, not only for our family but for the whole nation, which was left without a guardian.”

She described Ziaur Rahman as a foundational figure in the country’s history, recalling his role in proclaiming independence from Chattogram and his leadership as a patriotic, visionary, and principled president.

Highlighting his contributions, she referred to him as a symbol of democracy, sovereignty, and the rule of law, and credited him with championing press freedom, judicial independence, and the ideology of Bangladeshi nationalism.

She concluded with a prayer for the eternal peace of Ziaur Rahman’s soul.
