BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is set to make her first appearance at a political event in six years. The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal is organizing the event, scheduled for December 21, where Khaleda will be the chief guest.
Muktijoddha Dal President Syed Ishtiaque Aziz Ulfat announced that a gathering of freedom fighters will take place at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday, December 21.
Khaleda Zia’s participation has been confirmed. Ulfat said that he, along with BNP standing committee member Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, met with Khaleda on Saturday night to formally invite her to the event.
"She has agreed... she said that, if she is in good health, she will join the freedom fighters` gathering. We hope Madam will be able to take part in this programme,” Ulfat shared.
The last time Khaleda Zia attended a political event was on February 4, 2018, when she presided over a BNP extended meeting at a hotel in Dhaka. A few days later, on February 8, she was sentenced to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Ulfat further added that freedom fighters from across the country will be present at the December 21 gathering, which will mark the celebration of Victory Day.
Khaleda made her first public appearance in six years on November 21, when she attended the Armed Forces Day reception at Senakunja.
This was her first state function since her imprisonment in February 2018.
Khaleda Zia has been dealing with a series of serious health issues, including liver cirrhosis, and problems related to her heart, lungs, kidneys, and eyes.
Since her conditional release, she has received multiple treatments at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, under the care of a medical board led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.
