Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and Youth and Sports, stated that legal complexities are involved regarding Ishraque Hossain`s eligibility to assume the mayoral post, as the matter is still under judicial review.
“There’s no benefit in launching personal attacks against me—this issue must be resolved through legal proceedings in court,” he said.
He made these remarks while responding to journalists’ questions on Tuesday, May 20, during a daylong event titled Youth Assembly 2025, organized by the National Youth Development Institute in Savar, where he was present as the chief guest.
Asif Mahmud clarified that government decisions are made collectively and not by individuals.
“There’s no reason to think I’m making any major decisions alone. Legal complications do exist, and the matter is currently sub judice. We have sought the opinion of the Ministry of Law regarding these issues,” he said.
He further explained, “Since the Law Ministry is the authority on such matters, we will act based on their expert opinion.”
Addressing the issue of India`s export ban, the adviser remarked that the embargo could potentially hurt India more than Bangladesh, given that India exports more to Bangladesh.
“This situation requires us to explore alternatives. While there may be some short-term disruptions and losses for businesses, it is also an opportunity to work toward long-term self-reliance,” he added.
Earlier, while speaking as the chief guest at the Youth Assembly, Asif said that utilizing the potential of Bangladesh’s youth population could lead the country to greater success. “Just as we saw widespread participation during the July uprising, we need similar collective effort for our country’s economic development.”
