RUCSU election date to be deferred: Chief election commissioner

The Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election will be delayed as the deadline for collecting and submitting nomination papers has been extended by five days, election authorities announced on Tuesday.

Chief Election Commissioner Professor F. Nazrul Islam disclosed the development at a press conference held at the RUCSU Treasurer’s office around 4:45 pm.

He said several changes have been introduced in connection with the election. These include relocating polling centers from residential halls to academic buildings, forming a cyber cell, and adding photographs to the voter list.

“Following various demands—including the replacement of the chief election commissioner and the longer time required for dope tests—we held a meeting today,” Prof. Nazrul Islam said. “The new polling date will be announced after the meeting.”

Addressing the issue of including first-year students in the voter list, he clarified: “These students were admitted after the election schedule was announced. According to the constitution, they cannot participate in the election.”

Earlier, the election schedule was announced on July 28. According to the revised timetable, the deadline for collecting nomination papers, initially set for August 26, has been extended to August 31.

Nomination forms for the RUCSU and Senate representative elections can be collected from the Treasurer’s office, while forms for the hall union elections will be available from the respective hall returning officers at the administrative offices.
