Zubaida Rahman granted bail in graft case; fine suspended

Zubaida Rahman, a physician, returned to Bangladesh in May 2025 after 17 years abroad.

The High Court has granted bail to Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The bail will remain effective until her appeal against a three-year jail sentence is resolved.

The court also suspended a fine of Tk 3.5 million and accepted her appeal for hearing.

Zubaida’s legal team had earlier appealed to excuse a 587-day delay in filing her response, which the court accepted on Tuesday.

Her lawyer Kaysar Kamal stated that the case documents have been summoned, while another counsel, SM Shahjahan, described the case as politically motivated.

Zubaida, a physician, returned to Bangladesh in May 2025 after 17 years abroad. In 2008, she moved to London with Tarique Rahman and their daughter.

The case, originally filed during the military-backed caretaker government in 2007, accused Tarique, Zubaida, and her mother of concealing assets worth Tk 48.1 million.
