Apple is preparing to give the Mac mini a major update nearly two years after its last significant refresh. A new version of the compact desktop computer could hit the market within the next few days.
If unveiled, the new Mac mini could go on sale before Apple’s September event for the iPhone 18 Pro series. Apple has reportedly tested versions of the new model powered by both M5 and M6 chips. However, it remains unclear which chip will ultimately make it into the final product.
Demand for the current Mac mini has increased in recent months, particularly as more users look to run artificial intelligence (AI) applications directly on their computers. The compact desktop has consequently gained popularity. However, shortages of memory chips have also affected supplies of the current model.
Some customers are reportedly having to wait several weeks or even months to receive their devices.
Details about the design or hardware changes coming to the new Mac mini remain scarce. However, Apple is expected to focus on improving the device’s performance with a new-generation processor.
Meanwhile, the tech world is also closely watching Apple’s September iPhone event. Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone. The event is likely to take place in the first half of September, although Apple has yet to officially announce a date.
In addition to the Mac mini, Apple is preparing to launch several other new products later this year, including a new iPad mini, iMac and MacBook Pro. These Macs could also feature the next-generation M6 chip.
The new Mac mini could be significant for Apple for another reason: it may be among the last major new products unveiled during Tim Cook’s tenure as CEO. John Ternus is expected to take over as Apple’s CEO on September 1.
