Legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers is making an exciting comeback to the game after an almost four-year absence.
The former star batsman has announced that he will be captaining the Game Changers South Africa Champions squad in the second World Championship of Legends (WCL) competition.
Leading a team of cricketing greats in this thrilling competition is De Villiers, who is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played the game.
WCL provides fans worldwide with an action-packed experience by bringing together active and retired players to display their skills.
Reflecting on his decision to come out of retirement, de Villiers said,
“Four years ago, I retired from all cricket because I just didn’t feel the urge to play anymore. Well, time has passed, and my young sons have started playing the game. We`ve been playing more and more often in the garden, and, well, it feels as though some kind of flame has been lit again,” as quoted from a release by WCL.
He added,
"So I am heading back to the gym and the nets, and I`ll be ready for WCL in July."
In the cricket community, De Villiers` return has generated excitement.
Cricket greats like Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Dale Steyn, and Imran Tahir have previously played for the Game Changers.
The team is anticipated to reach new heights now that de Villiers is leading them.
The founder of Game Changers and co-owner of South Africa Champions, Amandeep Singh, expressed his excitement:
“We are honoured to compete in the World Championship of Legends and showcase the incredible talent of our cricketing greats. AB de Villiers` return as our captain is a monumental boost for our team, and his leadership will undoubtedly inspire us to new heights.”
De Villiers scored 8765, 9577, and 1672 runs in 114 Test matches, 228 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 78 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) respectively while playing for South Africa.
He participated in a Test match against Australia at the New Wanderers Stadium in 2018, which was his final appearance for his country.
