Additional Inspector General of Police and Chief of Tourist Police Habibur Rahman received International Mother Language Award - 2023 for his outstanding role on research collaboration on language.
He received this award for his contribution to the collection of 'Thar' language, the almost extinct mother tongue of the Bede community.
The Bede, also known as river gypsies, are a nomadic ethnic group in Bangladesh who used to live on boats and never stayed in one place for more than a few months. They still make a living charming snake, puppeteering monkeys and performing magic tricks.
The Thar language has no letters or script. Basically, it is a spoken language which is beyond the understanding of ordinary people.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented the award at a ceremony organized at the auditorium of the International Mother Language Institute on Tuesday on the occasion of Shaheed Dibas (Martyrs' Day) and International Mother Language Day.
Born in Chandra Dighlia village of Gopalganj, Habibur joined the 17th BCS police cadre as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
The International Mother Language Award is a civilian award of Bangladesh, being given every two years from 2021 in the recognition of special contribution to mother language around the world.
