Bangladesh has urged India to take faster steps to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and send back those accused in the murder of Osman Hadi.
The issues were raised during a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Monday, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.
Trivedi met Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat around 11am in his first meeting with the prime minister since taking charge in Dhaka.
“Bangladesh hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina,” the press release said.
Bangladesh also repeated its request for the return of those accused of killing Osman Hadi.
The meeting covered several issues related to Bangladesh-India relations. Tarique Rahman stressed the need to create a favourable environment for further improving ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Trivedi briefed the prime minister on his experience during his first two months in Dhaka, said Shahadat Shadhin, deputy press secretary to the prime minister.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir were also present at the meeting.
India appointed Trivedi as its 16th high commissioner to Bangladesh in April, replacing Pranay Kumar Verma. A veteran politician from West Bengal, Trivedi has previously served as India’s railway and health minister.
He formally took charge after presenting his credentials to then-president Mohammed Shahabuddin on June 25.
Since arriving in Dhaka, Trivedi has met Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed as part of his diplomatic engagements.
