Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Sunday paid homage to the martyrs of Bangladesh‍‍`s Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar.

He arrived at the memorial at around 11:40am and laid a floral wreath in honour of those who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, the acting President observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect for the fallen heroes. A contingent of the Armed Forces presented him with a guard of honour before he signed the visitors‍‍` book.

Later in the day, Hafiz Uddin is scheduled to pay tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia by laying wreaths at their graves at the Zia Mausoleum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Following the programmes, he will return to Bangabhaban to perform his routine official duties as acting head of state.

Hafiz Uddin assumed the responsibilities of acting President on Friday after President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office due to health reasons.

Under Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad assumes the role of acting President when the office becomes vacant. Shahabuddin submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker, citing ill health.
