Military Operations Directorate Colonel Staff Intekhab Haider Khan today said Bangladesh Army is working relentlessly to maintain overall law and order situation.
“We’ve been working tirelessly to maintain overall law and order situation by preventing unwanted anarchy, maintaining communal harmony and ensuring security of foreign diplomats and embassies,” he said at a press briefing on the army’s activities on maintaining the country’s law and order at Officers’ Mess in Dhaka Cantonment.
The army officer said they have been working to protect the key point installations (KPIs) and important public and private offices, keep the main streets free for traffic movement alongside recovering illegal arms and drugs, and arresting drug traders and people involved in criminal activities s and individuals linked to instigate anarchy.
The Bangladesh Army is working to uphold peace and maintain law and order in Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) and ensure security at FDMN (Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals) camp areas of Cox’s Bazar district, he added.
Apart from these, he said Bangladesh Army has also been working to ensure security of the industrial zones to make undisrupted operations of the mills and factories.
“We want to help the interim government so that the government can run the state smoothly,” he added.
He said army recovered 24 illegal arms and 365 rounds of ammunition from November 13 to till now. They also controlled 40 civil unrests and played a pivotal role in controlling 18 road blockades in industrial zones, he added.
They resolved 63 disorderly situations, including those related to political conflicts, educational institutions, and government offices.
He said the army arrested 1,328 persons for their alleged involvement in different crimes during the time.
The army personnel arrested 228 people involved in drug-related offenses, he said, adding that a significant quantity of narcotics was also recovered during joint operations with law enforcement agencies.
He said the army played a crucial role in ensuring the peaceful celebration of major religious and cultural festivals.
Intekhab Haider Khan said they provided security in Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, and Patuakhali from November 15 to 16 and November 20 to celebrate Rasmela and Nabanno festivals.
He said they ensured safety during the festival in Barishal from November 10 to 12.
Special operations against the armed separatist group, the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), have been ongoing since April, he said, adding that so far, 179 KNF members or collaborators have been arrested, and 60 weapons, alongside a large cache of ammunition and military equipment, were recovered.
Intekhab Haider Khan said the army personnel had to face obstacles in conducting the as seven soldiers embraced martyrdom and others were injured in improvised explosive device (IED) blasts and surprise attacks.
He said the army has also been providing medical assistance to civilians injured in anti-discrimination movements. Over 3,430 people have received treatment at Combined Military Hospitals (CMH), with 35 still under care, he added.
Additionally, the army officer said, four critically injured individuals were sent abroad for advanced treatment.
He said army personnel have faced significant challenges during this period, with 123 members injured and one killed in the line of duty. Despite this, Colonel Intekhab reaffirmed the army`s unwavering commitment to ensuring national safety and stability, he added.
The executive magistracy powers granted to officers of the rank of Captain and above were extended for another 60 days on November 15, enabling the military to continue its efforts to maintain law and order effectively.
He said Bangladesh Army remains dedicated to its role in safeguarding the nation and supporting its people.
Colonel Intekhab emphasized, pledging continued service for the country`s peace and stability.
