A man has been detained in Faridpur for allegedly taking money from poor residents by promising to arrange government “family cards."
The accused, Md Saiful Islam from Keshabnagar village in Sadar upazila, was handed over to police on Friday evening after locals confronted him over the allegations.
Residents said he collected between Tk 700 and Tk 1,000 from several underprivileged people, claiming he could provide them with the cards.
Suspicions arose when his statements appeared inconsistent, prompting victims to contact a hotline linked to a local lawmaker. After initial verification, locals, with support from political activists, detained him and handed him over to Kotalipara Police Station.
Police said the accused admitted to taking the money and expressed regret.
Officer-in-charge Mohammad Shahidul Islam confirmed that the matter is under investigation and further legal steps will be taken based on findings.
