The government has decided to change the name of Bangabandhu Satellite-1, which was the country’s first and only satellite. The satellite will now be officially known as Bangladesh Satellite-1.
The announcement came through a government notification issued on Monday, March 3.
The official notification, signed by Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, confirmed that the Chief Advisor had approved the proposal to rename the satellite.
As per the notice, it stated: "The Chief Advisor has approved the proposal to rename Bangabandhu Satellite-1 (BS-1) as Bangladesh Satellite-1 (BS-1)."
Following this decision, relevant authorities have been instructed to proceed with necessary actions.
This change follows a decision that was made earlier during a meeting of the Advisory Council.
The decision to rename the satellite had been under consideration for some time and was finally endorsed in this meeting.
With this renaming, the country’s satellite, which has been a crucial asset in telecommunications, broadcasting, and weather forecasting, will now carry a broader national identity under the new title—Bangladesh Satellite-1.
The move signifies a shift in branding for the nation’s satellite project, which was launched to bolster communications and broadcast services across Bangladesh and beyond.
