Former air force chief Hannan, family barred from leaving country

Shaikh Abdul Hannan is accused of power abuse, bribery, mismanagement of state funds, irregularities in recruitment, and unlawful accumulation of assets.

A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Air Force chief Shaikh Abdul Hannan and three of his family members amid an ongoing anti-corruption investigation.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The travel restrictions apply to Hannan’s wife Tahmida Begum, son Shaikh Labib Hannan, and daughter Sanjida Akter.

ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam confirmed that Deputy Director Tanjir Hasib Sarkar submitted the petition on behalf of the commission.

According to the ACC, a probe team has been formed to investigate multiple allegations against Hannan, including abuse of power, bribery, mismanagement of state funds, irregularities in recruitment, and unlawful accumulation of assets.

The petition stated that the ACC received intelligence suggesting that Hannan and his family were preparing to leave the country, prompting the agency to seek a travel ban to ensure an unimpeded investigation.

Top nuclear scientist and wife also face travel ban

In a separate order, the court also issued a travel ban against Mohammad Monjur Ahasan, chief scientific officer at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and his wife Nargis Khanam.

ACC Assistant Director Anisur Rahman filed the application for the ban as part of an ongoing inquiry into allegations of illegally acquired wealth.

The ACC argued that the couple might attempt to flee the country, which could hamper the investigation process.
