The Saudi authorities have not suspended the issuance of Umrah visas for Bangladeshis, as clarified by Religious Advisor A F M Khalid Hossain during a briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
According to the advisor, those seeking to perform Umrah can still obtain their visas by arranging hotel bookings, airline tickets, and contacting Saudi Umrah agents.
The Religious Advisor shared that the Saudi Ambassador in Dhaka has assured the Religious Secretary through an audio message, confirming that there are no restrictions on Bangladeshi pilgrims.
The Ambassador also recommended that Bangladeshi agencies work directly with their Saudi counterparts to facilitate the process.
In response to concerns regarding travelers who have purchased airline tickets but no longer wish to go for Umrah, the advisor confirmed that Biman Bangladesh Airlines will refund the tickets according to the rules.
Additionally, Saudi Airlines has informed that those who intended to travel during Ramadan but did not receive their visas can reschedule for July.
The advisor also emphasized that the Saudi Embassy is not involved in any irregularities or misconduct with regard to visa processing.
He explained that this year, there has been a significant increase in the number of pilgrims going for Umrah, which has led the Saudi authorities to regulate visa issuance more strictly.
During the briefing, the advisor was asked about the recent remarks made by U.S. National Intelligence Director, Tulsi Gabbard, concerning religious minority persecution in Bangladesh.
The advisor responded by saying that while there have been some isolated incidents, they do not reflect the extent of the problem as portrayed in the comments.
Regarding the recent attacks on shrines, the advisor assured that the government is taking necessary actions.
He also pointed out that the government is firmly dealing with groups like Hizb-ut-Tahrir, who attempted to hold rallies, but their efforts have been thwarted.
When asked about the possibility of Islamophobia in Bangladesh, the advisor firmly rejected the claim, stating that such an idea is not accurate.
This latest statement from the Religious Advisor aims to clear any confusion surrounding the Umrah visa situation and to address concerns about religious tensions in the country.
