Pori Moni drug case trial begins with deposition recording

The trial into a narcotics case filed against Dhallywood actoress Pori Moni and her two associates has began at a Dhaka court with deposition of the complainant, reports The Daily Star.

The two other accused are Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain. The three were indicted in the case on January 5.

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the Special Judge Court-10 of Dhaka recorded statement of complainant Deputy Assistant Director Md Majibur Rahman of Rab on Tuesday.

Later, defence for Dipu and Kabir cross-examined the complainant on different points.

But defence for Pori Moni submitted an application, seeking an adjournment of the hearing as Pori Moni could not appear begore it due to illness.

In the application, the lawyer also said Pori Moni submitted a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of trial court that framed charges against her in the case.

The High Court heard it and said it will pass an order on the issue later in the day.

The judge, however, allowed the petition for her absence and asked the defence to cross-examine the witness in her absence.

Later, the defence cross-examined the witnesses partly and also sought more time for cross-examination's next date.

The judge then fixed March 29 for next hearing of the case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on November 15 accepted the charge-sheet filed in the case and transferred it to Dhaka 10th Special Judge Court for further proceedings.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on October 4 had filed the charge-sheet.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayesh on August 31 allowed bail to Pori Moni in the case and she was finally released from the jail the next day.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Pori Moni on August 4 from her Banani flat and seized huge amounts of foreign liquors and different drugs from there.
