Expelled National Citizen Party leader Mahin Sarker today announced that he is withholding his candidature for the post of general secretary in Dhaka University Central Students` Union (Ducsu) election.
He also said that he will support Abu Baker Mojumder, a general secretary candidate from Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad panel in the Ducsu polls, reports The Daily Star.
Mahin, former joint member secretary of NCP, announced the decision during a press conference at Madhur Canteen on Dhaka University campus this morning.
Explaining his decision, Mahin said that his move was intended to maintain unity among the forces of the mass uprising. "If Abu Baker wins, it will be my victory as well," he said.
He added, "I believe that if the leadership of the mass uprising is elected in the Ducsu polls, they will work more effectively for the students than anyone else."
Addressing his supporters, he said, "Those who support me, please vote for Abu Baker since it is not possible to cancel my candidature at this point and my name will remain on the Ducsu election list. I am expressing my support for Abu Baker Mojumder."
Earlier he announced that he will contest the general secretary post in the election as an independent candidate, and then NCP expelled him for breaching "party discipline".
Later he joined a panel led by vice president candidate Jamaluddin Khalid.
