Bangladesh reported five more dengue-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing this year’s total fatalities to 187, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the same period, 668 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals nationwide.
The DGHS’s Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room released the data on Wednesday (24 September).
Of the new hospitalizations, Barishal division recorded the highest number with 158 cases, followed by Chattogram with 106, Dhaka division (outside city corporations) with 126, Dhaka North City with 94, Dhaka South City with 73, Khulna with 41, Rajshahi with 35, Mymensingh with 30, and Rangpur with 5.
Among the five deaths, three occurred in Dhaka South City and two in Dhaka North City.
Since the start of 2024, a total of 43,841 dengue patients have been hospitalized nationwide, DGHS said.
For comparison, in 2024 Bangladesh recorded 101,214 dengue cases and 575 deaths by year’s end, while in 2023 the country saw 321,179 hospitalizations and 1,705 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease—the highest annual toll on record.
