Thirteen people were killed in police shootings near the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro during an anti-terror operation to arrest the head of a criminal gang.
The operation was carried out on Thursday (March, 23).
According to the police, they raided the northern state of Pará, Brazil. On the basis of reports Leonardo Costa Araujo, the head of the drug cartel, is hiding. Members of the criminal gang attacked the police during the arrest of Araujo. When the police fired back, the suspected criminals were killed.
Araujo was also killed in the clash. He was allegedly involved in the death of several police officers.
Helicopters and armored vehicles were also used in the police operation to arrest Araujo.
