Trump pauses US Hormuz escort mission
Donald Trump said the United States has temporarily halted its military escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz to allow more time for talks with Iran.
The operation, called “Project Freedom,” was launched to help ships move through the key waterway after rising tensions in the region.
Trump said the decision followed requests from Pakistan and other countries, adding that progress had been made toward a possible agreement with Tehran.
He noted that the US blockade on Iranian ports would remain in place during the pause.
US officials said the escort mission had led to clashes with Iranian forces, with several boats reportedly destroyed during the operation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States has completed its main offensive actions against Iran under an operation known as “Epic Fury.”
Rubio said Washington is now focused on defensive measures and warned that US forces would respond if attacked.
The conflict began after Israeli and US strikes on Iran earlier this year, which were followed by missile and drone attacks across the region.
Although a ceasefire was announced in April, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have remained difficult.
US officials said they still hope for a negotiated settlement despite ongoing tensions.
