Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, veteran Indian leftist leader and former West Bengal chief minister, died at his south Kolkata residence this morning at the age of 80.

He lived in a small two-room government apartment in south Kolkata’s Ballygunge area.

During 34 years of Left Front rule in Bengal, Bhattacharya was the second and last CPM chief minister who was in office from year 2000 to 2011, for 11 consecutive years.

Bhattacharya was admitted to a private hospital in Alipor, Calcutta, with multiple ailments on July 29 2023. He was being treated for pneumonia and had to be put on ventilation. But he responded to the treatment and was released on August 9.

He had been suffering from from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has rarely left home in the last few years. He was last seen outside in 2019 when he went to a CPI(M) rally but could not attend due to a dust allergy and returned home.
