The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity, holding them responsible for offenses committed during the July Mass Uprising.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict after finding both Hasina and Khan Kamal guilty of the charges framed against them. Another accused, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, was also found guilty but received a lighter sentence of five years in prison for his full disclosure of relevant events as a state witness.
The tribunal began reading out the judgment at 12:50 pm. Justice Mozumder described the 453-page ruling, divided into six parts, and said a summary would be read in stages, with the final portion taking approximately 40 minutes.
Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury read the first part of the judgment until 1:10 pm, followed by Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmood, who delivered the middle sections until 1:56 pm. The tribunal chairman then read the sentencing portion, concluding the proceedings at 2:45 pm.
Before announcing the verdict, Justice Mozumder expressed his gratitude to the Attorney General, the prosecution team, investigation agencies, tribunal staff, and journalists for their contributions to the trial.
