ICT-1 sets Nov 17 to deliver verdict on Hasina case

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) has fixed November 17 for delivering its first verdict in a case filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others over alleged crimes against humanity during last year’s July–August uprising.

A three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, along with Justices Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, set the date on Thursday.

The other accused are former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun — the latter being the only one arrested and testifying as a state witness.

The charges include ordering lethal attacks on protesters, using helicopters and drones, and inciting violence through public statements. Incidents cited in the case involve the deaths of protesters in Dhaka and Rangpur and burnings in Ashulia.

After several extensions, the tribunal accepted the final probe report in May this year, and charges were formally framed on July 10. The prosecution has sought the death penalty for Hasina and Asaduzzaman, while their state-appointed lawyers have sought acquittal.

Arguments concluded on October 23. The verdict will mark the first ruling by the reconstituted tribunal since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
