A Dhaka tribunal on Saturday sentenced a man and his wife to death for their roles in the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter, a case that sparked widespread outrage across the country.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Children‍‍`s Violence Suppression Tribunal.

In addition to the death sentence, the court fined convict Sohel Rana Tk 5 lakh and his wife, Swapna Akter, Tk 2 lakh.

Ramisa, a second-grade student of Popular Model High School, was found murdered on May 19 in the Millat Camp area of Pallabi. According to the prosecution, the child was raped and later killed at the flat of her neighbour, Sohel Rana.

Law enforcement agencies arrested Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter on the day of the incident, and the case quickly drew national attention due to the brutal nature of the crime.

The tribunal began delivering the judgment at 11:00 am and later pronounced both accused guilty after reviewing the evidence and testimonies presented during the trial.

The ruling brings legal closure to one of the most widely discussed child murder cases in recent months.
