Dhaka WASA has announced a 10% increase in water prices, effective from July 1. This information was disclosed in a statement by Dhaka WASA authorities on Wednesday, May 29.

According to the statement, the price hike is in line with Section 22 of the WASA Act 1996, which allows for price adjustments to account for inflation. Residential customers will now pay 16.70 taka per 1,000 liters of water, up from the current rate of 15.18 taka. For commercial customers, the price will be 46.20 taka per 1,000 liters, an increase from the current rate of 42 taka. This decision will also apply to unmetered holdings, deep tube wells, buildings under construction, and all types of (water and sewage) tariffs, including the minimum bill.

It is noteworthy that Dhaka WASA last increased water prices in July 2021. In 2022, Dhaka WASA attempted another price hike, which was challenged in the High Court. The High Court issued a rule asking why the price increase should not be declared illegal without proper regulations, resulting in the suspension of the price hike.
