Samsuzzaman Shams, a journalist of national daily Prothom Alo, was sent to jail after the court denied his request for bail in a case under Digital Security Act with Ramna police station. Editor of Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman is named as the case's main defendant.
Shams was picked up from his home from Ambagan area near Jahangirnagar University at Savar and brought before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka around 10:30am on Thursday, 30 hours later.
The order was issued on Thursday by Tofazzel Hossain, an additional chief metropolitan magistrate of the CMM court, confirmed by Samsuzzaman's attorney Prasanta Karmakar.
He was the subject of two DSA cases, one at the Ramna police station and the other at the Tejgaon police. His attorney argued for bail but Ramna police sought to lock him up.
The judge rejected his request for release after hearing from both parties.
