At least five people have died after a private car fell into a roadside pond in Shahrasti of Chandpur.
The incident took place at Narah village under Chitoshi east union in upazila around 12:45am Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as Shah Poran Tushar (22) from Ramdevpur village at Hasnabad union of Monohorganj upazila in Cumilla, Shakil (23) from Norpaia village of the same area, Rezaul Karim (23) from Chapa Keshtola, Md. Noyon from Dhanyakhola village at Sharsha upazila in Jashore and Md. Sagor Hossain from North Khailkur village in Gazipur Sadar upazila.
Officials of Shahrasti model police station and fire service sources confirmed the matter.
Locals said, the private car lost its control and fell into the pond at Mollartek area of East Narah village in Shahrasti while the vehicle was moving towards Chatkhil from Cumilla. None could come out of the car as the glass doors were closed.
Members of fire service broke into the car but none was alive, said Inspector (investigation) Md. Morshedul Alam Bhuiyan of Shahrasti Model police station.
Deputy Assistant Director of Chandpur Fire service Md. Sahidul Islam said, on information a unit rushed to the spot, rescued the bodies and handed over to the law enforcement agency.
