A human chain was held in Patuakhali on Wednesday demanding the expansion of the Bhanga-Kuakata highway into a six-lane road, with participants saying the upgrade is vital for improving transport, tourism and economic activities in the country‍‍`s southern region.

The hour-long demonstration took place near the Patuakhali Bus Terminal and brought together members of the Patuakhali Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the District Bus and Minibus Owners‍‍` Association, the Bus and Minibus Workers‍‍` Union, as well as representatives of various social, cultural and professional organisations.

Participants said the Bhanga-Kuakata highway serves as the principal road connection between Dhaka and the southern districts, including Patuakhali and the popular tourist destination of Kuakata.

They alleged that growing traffic volume has resulted in frequent congestion and a rising number of road accidents along the highway.

The speakers urged the government to widen the highway to six lanes, saying the project would improve connectivity, boost tourism, facilitate trade and commerce, and accelerate economic development across the region.
