Man killed as protesters, cops clash in Gazipur

A 45-year-old man were killed and 50 others were reportedly injured during clashes between police and protesters in Gazipur‍‍`s Sreepur upazila on Saturday.

The deceased is Jahangir Alam, police confirmed, adding he was from Satkhira  and was a tenant of his relative Md Kajor Mia’s house in Channapara area and would work at a quilt making shop in front of the Macca-Medina Spinning Factory there.

The incident took place in Channapara area of ​​the upazila, said Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akbar Ali Khan, adding that the police did not open fire. 

"The man died due to head injury after falling during the protest," he told reporters.

However, the upazila‍‍`s movement coordinator Sarful Islam alleged that the police opened fire during the protest.

"Nine people who took part in the protest were shot and more than 50 were injured," he said.
