A local journalist of Comilla was shot dead allegedly by drug dealers in the district's Burichang upazila, adjacent to the Charnal Hyderabad's Zero Point area at the Indian border on Wednesday night, reports The Daily Star.
The deceased is Mohiuddin Sarkar Nayem (26) of Olua village under Malapara union of Brahmanpara upazila, confirmed Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Burichang Police Station.
Police said they got an identity card from the deceased which said the victim was a journalist for local daily Cummilar Dak.
Two youths who witnessed the incident said the incident occurred at Hyderabad border's Zero Point area around 9:30 pm.
A BGB team rescued Mohiuddin and sent him to Burichang Upazila Sadar Hospital where a duty doctor declared him dead, said Mir Hossain, upazila health and family planning officer.
He said the victim was brought to the hospital at 10:30 pm. "There were four-five bullets wounds in his body. We got him dead," he added.
According to the two local youths, Mohiuddin was shot by two men at 9:30 pm. Later, they rescued him with the help of BGB and took him to the hospital.
According to local journalist Farooq Ahmed, Cummila's top smuggler Raju Gang carried out a random attack on the Burichang Shankuchail border.
Mohiuddin was also well-known as a source of law enforcement agencies in the Burichang upazila's Brahmanpara border area.
He had a dispute with Raju Gang, a drug dealer in the Indian border area. The accused Raju is known as a BGB source in the area.
Senior police officials of the district visited the spot.
