A legal dispute over a candidate`s nomination has led to the poll Commission (EC) suspending the Nangalkot Upazila Parishad poll in Comilla.
On Monday, the Deputy Secretary, Md. Atiar Rahman, signed the order, which was released by the Election Commission.
Munir Hossain Khan, the senior election officer in Comilla, verified the information.
Saleha Begum, a candidate for the position of female vice-chairman in the Nangalkot Upazila Parishad election, had her nomination document canceled after some inspection, according to sources close to the Election Commission.
In this context, Saleha Begum filed a writ case with the High Court on April 25, and the court upheld the validity of her nomination paper. It also mandated that the election officials provide her a symbol.
Later, the Election Commission challenged the High Court`s ruling in an appeal to the Appellate Division. As a result, it has put off the Nangalkot Upazila Parishad election until after it gets a ruling from the highest court.
Saleha Begum`s nomination paper was revoked since she filed it for the position of female vice-chairman without giving up her membership in the Peria Union Parishad of the Nangalkot upazila election.
Saleha Begum stated in this regard: "To regain my candidacy, I had filed a writ before the High Court. I haven`t given up my position as a UP member, though.
Three candidates are running for the chairman position in Nangalkot upazila, four are running for the vice-chairman position for men, and three are running for women.
