Palli Bidyut employee lynched while disconnecting illegal line

An employee of the Palli Bidyut Samity has been lynched to death while he went to disconnect illegal connections at Shibganj upazila in Bogura. 

The mob-beating also left six other people injured.  

The incident occurred at Bhaiyerpukur Bazar under Aatmul union of the upazila Friday night. Police have arrested five people in connection with the lynching.

The deceased Abdul Hannan, 39, worked as an office assistant at the sub-division office in Bogura Palli Bidyut Samity-1.

The injured are Assistant General Manager (AGM) Rakibuzzaman, linemen Pintu Pramanik, Bikash Chandra, Faruk Hossain, and Azizul Haque.

On Saturday, Rakibuzzaman filed a case with Shibganj police station accusing 18 people and 60-70 other anonymous.

The arrestees are Abu Sayeed (50), his son Sohel Rana alias Sabuj (25) of Parmandpur village, Babar Ali (30), Ataur Rahman (30) of Chandanpur village and Kazi Imran Ali (32) of Barabelgharia village.

Onlookers said the accused Abu Sayeed has been using an illegal power supply line from Paramandpur village. Besides, he has been using the electricity for business purposes at Bhaiyerpukur Bazar. On information, a team of the Palli Bidyut Samity headed by Rakibuzzaman launched a drive to disconnect the line.

When the team was disconnecting the line Sayeed’s wife Safura Begum shouted ‘thief’, ‘thief’ and gathered other locals who attacked the team. They also held them, hostage, till midnight. Later, a Shibganj police patrol rushed to the scene and rescued the Palli Bidyut employees.

“Police rescued six people of the team while slain Abdul Hannan was missing. He was later found unconscious around one and half a kilometer away from the scene said Officer in Charge (OC) of Shibganj police station Mohammed Hasmat Ullah.

He was taken to Shibganj upazila health complex where physicians pronounced him dead on arrival.
