The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has identified documentation errors in the registration applications of 144 political parties, including the National Citizens` Party (NCP), according to KM Ali Newaz, Additional Secretary of the EC. However, the commission has granted the parties a 15-day extension to rectify and resubmit the required documents.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday (July 15), KM Ali Newaz said that in the first phase, 62 parties will receive formal letters outlining the deficiencies in their applications.
Letters will also be sent to the remaining parties in a subsequent phase. “The parties must correct all errors and submit the complete documents within the given timeframe,” he said.
Earlier, the EC had issued a public notice inviting registration applications from new political parties, setting April 20 as the deadline.
Following requests from several groups, including the NCP, the deadline was extended to June 22. By then, the EC had received 147 applications from 144 parties.
According to EC officials, none of the applicant parties passed the initial screening phase. The first batch of 62 parties will be notified this week, followed by 82 others, including the NCP, in the next round.
