A Dhaka court has placed actor Md. Siddiqueur Rahman on a three-day remand in connection with the murder of Parvez Bepari, a furniture worker killed during the July Movement protests in Gulshan last year.
The order was issued on Wednesday (September 3) by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman.
Earlier, on August 20, Siddique was shown arrested in the case. On August 27, Gulshan police sub-inspector and investigating officer Md. Samiul Islam sought a 10-day remand. The hearing was scheduled for September 3, when Siddique was produced before the court. After hearing arguments from the prosecution and a bail plea from the defense, the court granted a three-day remand.
Siddique had previously been remanded in a separate case over an attempted murder of a rickshaw-puller during the July protests. He was arrested on April 29 after being beaten by a group of youths on Bailey Road, who accused him of being aligned with the ruling Awami League, before handing him over to Ramna police. The following day, he was placed on a seven-day remand in that case and later sent to jail.
According to case documents, on July 19 last year, during the July uprising, Parvez Bepari (23) joined protests with friends in front of Subastu Tower in Gulshan. After the Friday prayers, he was struck by bullets allegedly fired by the accused. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His father, Md. Sabuj, later filed the case at Gulshan Police Station on July 2 this year.
