Former Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar laid to rest on Parliament premises

Former Speaker and former Acting President Jamiruddin Sircar was laid to rest on the Parliament premises following two namaz-e-janaza prayers on Sunday. The information was confirmed by BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held after Zuhr at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The second was offered after Asr at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. Among those attending were Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram), Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Government Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and members of Parliament.

Due to severe adverse weather conditions, it was not possible to take his body to his ancestral home in Panchagarh. He was later buried at a cemetery adjacent to the Parliament premises.

Earlier on Sunday (July 12), Jamiruddin Sircar passed away at 4:19am while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in the capital‍‍`s Shyamoli area. He was 94.

According to family sources, he had been receiving treatment at the hospital for several days due to age-related complications and various health issues.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) expressed profound grief over the death of the former Speaker and former Acting President. In a condolence message issued on Sunday morning, he prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. Deputy Speaker Barrister Qaiser Kamal also expressed his condolences.

The Chief Justice, the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the Attorney General, the central and unit committees of the Nationalist Lawyers‍‍` Forum, the presidents and secretaries of bar associations, and several lawyers‍‍` organisations of the Supreme Court also mourned his death.

Officials and employees of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, including its Secretary, likewise expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Jamiruddin Sircar.
