Akhtar files lawsuit against Awami League leaders and supporters in New York

National Citizens Party (NCP) Secretary Akhtar Hossain has filed a lawsuit against Awami League leaders and supporters in New York, accusing them of attacking him and other NCP members.

According to Akhtar Hossain, the complaint was lodged on Wednesday night (local time) at the Port Authority Police Department near John F. Kennedy Airport.

In a video statement released Thursday, he said, “After the airport attack, Awami League activists returned to the hotel lobby intending to attack again. NCP members and supporters present resisted them and contacted the police. Following police advice, I filed the case against those who had attempted to assault and threaten us, including two named individuals and 15–20 unidentified persons.”

Hossain said that following an incident on September 22, when Awami League supporters allegedly threw eggs at him as he exited Terminal 4, he was targeted multiple times in and around the airport.

He added that the attackers are linked to a banned organization in Bangladesh implicated in last year’s human rights abuses. “We will pursue legal action against Awami League activists both inside and outside Bangladesh. Their past crimes must be addressed under the law,” he said.

The incident occurred while Hossain was accompanying Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, a chief adviser to the interim government, attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Eyewitnesses said local Awami League leader Mizanur Rahman was seen throwing eggs and was briefly detained over an alleged stabbing of a BNP worker before being released.

During the protests outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, NCP and Awami League supporters clashed with opposing slogans. Hossain demanded legal action against the Awami League members involved in the attacks.
