A number of Jamaat-e-Islami activists and members of its Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir student branch are accused of fighting with police on Friday while leading a demonstration outside the Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Paltan, Dhaka.
The Jamaat-Shibir activists were demonstrating against the detention of 16 persons from a home in the Shahjadpur area of the city and demanding their immediate and unconditional release.
They were gathered under the banner of the "Islami Kanoon Bastobayon Committee"
According to reports, they were also protesting to protect Bangladeshi citizens' ability to practice their religion.
Just after the Jummah prayer completed, the procession left the Baitul Mukarram Mosque's north gate.
When the march arrived at the Nightingale intersection, the police beat and dispersed the Jamaat-Shibir leaders, eyewitnesses claimed.
Police detained two of the activists.
The activists did not request any permission from the police to carry out the procession, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Md Hayatul Islam Khan.
He said, the police took action to contain the situation after demonstrators threw brickbats at them.
However, a leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami branch in Dhaka North claimed that police carried out the attack on the demonstrators' peaceful procession.
