BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has cautioned that giving precedence to the July Agreement (July Charter) over the Constitution could set a dangerous precedent.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (19 August) in Gulshan, Dhaka, he emphasized that the focus should be on implementing the agreement within the framework of the Constitution.

Salahuddin noted that any inconsistencies in the July Agreement should be resolved through proper legal processes.

“We view the July Agreement positively, but nothing should be done that could create a bad precedent for the future,” he said. He also raised questions about whether the law could be imposed on the Appellate Division.

Commenting on the draft of the July Agreement, Salahuddin pointed out that some provisions were problematic and that discussions were needed on how to implement areas where political parties had reached consensus.

He emphasized that even with political consensus, all measures must ultimately be executed through the National Parliament.

He further stated that the current government was formed based on the existing Constitution, and no constitutional gaps were created during its swearing-in. “If there is no violation of the Constitution now, then concerns about the July Agreement’s supremacy are irrelevant,” he added.

Salahuddin also mentioned that notes of dissent have been submitted not only by BNP but by several other political parties.

On the election timeline, he expressed confidence that the BNP anticipates national elections in February 2026, aligning with the Chief Adviser’s announcement, and therefore sees no reason for concern regarding the voting process.
