BTRC blocks 1.25 lakh illegal cellphones in three days

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) blocked some 1 lakh 25 thousand mobile phones on the very first day after the announcement such blockage came into effect.

The commission barred the cellular phones from connecting to mobile networks as the devices were not registered with the National Equipment Identity Register.

According to BTRC data, as many as 3 lakh 49 thousand 652 cellphones are connected to their network. Out of those sets, 2 lakh 24 thousand 827 connected anew. However, a total of 1 lakh 24 thousand 861 failed the connection.

"We have started the blockage of unregistered phones since October 1. No more unofficial or illegal handset will connect to the national network while scores of phones were disconnected,” said BTRC vice-chairman Subrata Roy Maitra.

The BTRC sources said, all the phones which connected to the network before October were registered automatically. The IMEI numbers of almost 44 crore sets were auto-registered till September 30. Of them, about 22 crores are now active in the network.
