Meta has been hit with a substantial fine after refusing Turkish government demands to limit content on Facebook and Instagram. The company stated that it resisted restricting posts deemed in the public interest and was penalized as a result.

The Turkish government, under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has intensified efforts to control social media, particularly following the March 19 arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key opposition figure. Widespread protests erupted in response, prompting authorities to block platforms like X, Instagram, and Facebook.

“Government requests to restrict speech online alongside threats to shut down online services are severe and have a chilling effect on people’s ability to express themselves,” Meta said in a statement.

While Meta did not disclose the exact amount of the fine or the specific content targeted, the Media and Law Studies Association reported that over 700 X accounts, including those of journalists, media outlets, and civil society groups, were blocked. X announced plans to challenge the restrictions.

Additionally, dozens of individuals have been arrested over social media posts deemed supportive of the protests. The Associated Press has reached out to Turkish officials for comment.
