Producer Ekta Kapoor has said the release date of her upcoming horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla was chosen after careful planning, even though it comes close to two big-ticket action films hitting theatres.

The films Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups are both set for release on March 19. Kapoor said her film, scheduled to open on April 10, will benefit from the gap.

Speaking to the media, Kapoor said by the time Bhooth Bangla releases, both action films would have completed their initial box office run. She added that the timing also coincides with the end of some school exams and the start of a holiday period, which usually attracts family audiences.

Kapoor said her intention was to bring variety to theatres. She noted that family viewers enjoy light-hearted entertainers and that different genres can comfortably coexist at the box office.

Bhooth Bangla is directed by Priyadarshan and marks his reunion with actor Akshay Kumar after 14 years. The film is presented by Balaji Motion Pictures, a unit of Balaji Telefilms, in association with Akshay Kumar’s production house, Cape of Good Films.

Kapoor described Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan as creative “soulmates” and said both quickly agreed to work together once the project took shape. She added that the director later refined the script after joining the film.

The movie also features Wamiqa Gabbi, Paresh Rawal, Tabu and Rajpal Yadav, along with a posthumous appearance by veteran actor Asrani.

Asked about the possibility of a sequel, Kapoor said franchises cannot be planned in advance. “If a film works, it naturally becomes a franchise,” she said.
