Aston Villa secured a dominant 4–2 victory over Liverpool at home, a result that ensured their qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
From the outset, both sides engaged in an open, end-to-end contest. Aston Villa took the lead in the 42nd minute when Morgan Rogers found the net, sending them into halftime ahead 1–0.
Liverpool responded early in the second half, with captain Virgil van Dijk equalising in the 52nd minute through a powerful header from a corner. However, the parity lasted only a short while. Just five minutes later, a mistake by Dominik Szoboszlai was punished as Ollie Watkins restored Villa’s lead.
Watkins then completed his brace in the 73rd minute with a close-range finish, extending the advantage to 3–1. In the 89th minute, John McGinn effectively sealed the result with a strike from outside the box, putting the game beyond Liverpool’s reach. Van Dijk added a second goal in stoppage time, but it only reduced the deficit.
This defeat marked Liverpool’s 19th loss across all competitions this season. As a result, Arne Slot’s side still face uncertainty over their Champions League qualification, with their fate depending on the outcome of the Brighton vs Bournemouth match on the final day.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa climbed to fourth place in the league table with 62 points from 37 matches, overtaking Liverpool in the process.
